أنا الشهيدة سناء - I Am Martyr Sana’

ملحم، ادمون

On April 9, 1985, sixteen-year-old Sana’ Yusuf Muhaydali, driving a car loaded with 200 kilograms of high explosives, targeted a checkpoint of “Israeli” soldiers on the road between Batar and Jazeen in Southern Lebanon. The operation “led to large numbers of casualties among the enemy – about 50 killed and injured and the grounding of a number of heavy vehicles.” Sana’ left a video of herself announcing her will, saying goodbye to her family and explaining the reasons for her actions. She declared:
“I am martyr Sana’ Yousef Muhaydali; I am 17; I am from the South. Southern Lebanon. The occupied, oppressed south, the South of resistance and revolution… I am from the South of the martyrs, the South of Sheik Raghab Harb… the South of the hero Wajdi al-Sayeigh… May your joy burst forth on the day I die, as though it was my wedding day… I hope that my soul will join those of the other martyrs and will rebound like thunder on the heads of the enemy soldiers… I am not dead; I am still living amongst you; I am singing, dancing and fulfilling all my ambitions, I am filled with joy at being the embodiment of heroism and martyrdom… do not weep for me… be happy and laugh, because there are still living people to give you hope for liberation… I am putting down roots in the land of the South, and making it stronger with my blood and my love. I am going towards death so as not to have to wait for it… My last wish is that you call me “the bride of the South”.
Sana’ Muhaydali was an individual in history and real time, but her heroic operation made her an unforgettable source of inspiration. She lodged in the minds of people who heard her story and listened to her will and she passed into the collectivity of our culture. Sana’ has been labeled by people as a preeminent national heroine.
